Editor Matt Christie is flabbergasted and frustrated by the proposed WBA heavyweight title tournament that appears wholly unnecessary

Editor Matt Christie pens an open letter to the WBA and its president Gilberto Mendoza [pictured] in this week’s issue of Boxing News magazine. This is out now on our app and the print version is in stores on Thursday (January 28). Here is an excerpt.

LAST week I heard of your plans for a seven-fighter tournament designed to create one WBA heavyweight champion. As a boxing fan who truly adores the sport and its history, I must say, from here at least, this ‘tournament’ absolutely stinks. You already have a champion. Or as you like to call it, a ‘Super’ champion. Just remove the other two nonsensical titles, and wallop, job done. No need for a competition.
