JUAN FRANCISCO ESTRADA made the first defence of the WBC super-flyweight title, which he won from Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in April. On Saturday (August 24) he halted American Dewayne Beamon at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Hermosillo, Mexico. Estrada forced the referee to intervene in the ninth round.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has now called for Estrada to take on Britain’s WBA champion Kal Yafai in a unification.

On the undercard in Mexico, Liverpool’s Liam Smith kept busy by halting Mario Alberto Lozano. Jono Carroll was also in action. Eleazar Valenzuela took him 10 rounds but Carroll won a unanimous decision.
