THE Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez mega-fight set for September 16 for the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight titles will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The contest was announced with much fanfare on May 6, immediately after Canelo had outclassed Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at the same venue.

The showdown with Golovkin will be Canelo’s third contest at the T-Mobile Arena, though it was thought other sites were in the running for a fight of this magnitude, like the AT&T Stadium in Texas where Alvarez beat Britain’s Liam Smith.

Golovkin-Canelo is one of the best matches to be made in the sport and will be one of the biggest fights of 2017. HBO will televise the pay-per-view event in the US. A UK broadcaster is yet to be decided.

Canelo is proving to be a huge draw. He victory last month over a tame Chavez Jr was on course to do over a million buys on pay-per-view.

“We have too great warriors, this is the most anticipated fight right next to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather but the difference is this fight is going to have a lot of action, non-stop action,” promoter Oscar De La Hoya promised.
