IN what must surely be regarded as an anti-climax, Floyd Mayweather has confirmed the long-standing rumour that faded former welterweight belt-holder Andre Berto will be in the opposite corner for “Money’s” 49th contest on September 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

With fans hoping for the likes of Amir Khan and Keith Thurman, Mayweather instead encouraged his social media followers to “come be part of the history” as he takes on a man whose three career defeats have come in his last four outings.

That the speculation regarding the bout being on free TV came to nothing means this match will at least provide a stern test of Mayweather’s drawing power if not his unrivalled skills. Showtime will be hoping the current apathy gives way long before they broadcast the card. A healthy supporting bill would certainly help.
