DERRY MATHEWS will challenge WBA lightweight champion Richar Abril on March 6 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, on a show which already includes Paul Butler’s IBF super-flyweight fight with Zolani Tete.
Promoter Frank Warren told Boxing News, “That’s a good show. Again we’ve delivered for our guy home advantage. When we can we will. Paul and Derry in front of their fans have got a great opportunity of winning titles.
“You can’t write [Derry] off. He pulls things out the bag. One thing’s for sure, it’s something he can get up for.”
Anthony Crolla missed out on a shot at Abril after being badly injured by burglars before Christmas but Mathews, should he win, is open to boxing his old rival again for the title.
