Boksburg, South Africa: Heavy: Anton Nel (20-12-3) W TKO 1 Sithembile August (3-6).

Nel retains the national title with stoppage of poor August. This was a farcical and arguably dangerous mismatch. Nel put August down with the first real punch he threw. August showed guts to get up after that knockdown and a following one but when Nel put him down for third time it was waived off after just 90 seconds. The 47-year-old Nel, South Africa’s oldest- ever national champion was making the third defence of his title. It looked as though retirement was calling when he went 1-5 in a 6 bout spell but this is now his fourth win in a row and his 16th win by KO/TKO. Poor August, who trained in his garage, was not even in the latest BSA top 10. Five of his six recorded losses have been by KO/TKO and this is his fourth loss inside one round. If anything had gone wrong here the BSA would have had nowhere to hide-except behind the “wonderful” Sports Minister of course who has overall responsibility for this Government body.
