Alex Dilmaghani bout on Saturday night called off at the last minute

ON the night of his fight with Francisco Fonseca at the University of Bolton, Alex Dilmaghani had his bout for the WBA International super-featherweight strap called off.

Promoter Hennessy Sports said in a statement: “Due to Nicaraguan Fonseca feeling unwell in his dressing room before his ringwalk and then following an examination by doctors, the decision was made by the British Boxing Board of Control to withdraw Fonseca from the contest and he has been referred to hospital for further assessment.

“Whilst Hennessy Sports are disappointed that the main event has had to be cancelled, we understand that Fonseca’s health and safety is paramount and respect the decision.”

The bout was due to be televised on Channel 5 but had to be cancelled at the last minute.

  • 100% with you Ozzy. Disappointing for all concerned but the fighters’ health and well-being should always come first, second and third. There’s always another day !

  • Gutted for the lad – this was very unusual circumstances however it was better than having Dilmaghani batter an ill opponent around the ring on national TV.
