WHEN Jamie McDonnell agreed to defend his WBA ‘regular’ world bantamweight title against Tomoki Kameda, 31-1 (19), in Texas in May, the word that came to mind for most was ‘brave’. Not only would he be fighting outside of the UK for the first time, McDonnell would be facing an unbeaten former world champion (Kameda vacated his WBO belt prior to facing Jamie as the governing body would not permit the unification bout). After getting off the deck to earn a close decision, McDonnell, 26-2-1 (12), will travel to the same state to face the same fighter for the same belt all over again. He is a seriously brave man.
Though the fight is happening because Kameda initiated an immediate rematch clause from their first contest, McDonnell had made no complaints about fighting on the road again. The pair will meet at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi on Sunday (September 6) with TGB Promotions and Matchroom coordinating this PBC show.
“I’m more excited for this one, rematches are always bigger,” McDonnell told Boxing News. “I didn’t know much about Kameda going into the first fight but now I’m obviously going in there with a lot more knowledge so I expect to put on a better performance.”
