AHEAD of his highly anticipated May 5 rematch with WBA, IBF and WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, the Nevada State Athletic Commission have temporarily suspended Canelo Alvarez after he tested positive for traces of clenbuterol, a prohibited substance.

Alvarez’s team put the failed drug test down to eating contaminated beef in Mexico.

It throws the scheduled fight into doubt as Canelo will have to come before a hearing on April 10.

Golovkin reportedly intends to fight at the T Mobile arena on that date regardless, with his team considering the possibility of a unification with WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

Saunders’ defence against Martin Murray had recently been rescheduled for June 23.
