BEHIND a commanding jab, Gennady Golovkin totally dominated David Lemeiux for eight rounds on Saturday night (October 17) at New York’s famous Madison Square Garden in front of over 20,000 spectators.
Lemiuex was dropped by a left hook to the body in the fifth round and was battered from pillar to post for the remaining three sessions.
Referee Steve Willis had seen enough and rescued the brave Canadian at 1-32 of the eighth.
“I feel like the referee called the fight too early. I am fine,” said Lemieux.
‘GGG’ landed 280 of 549, while Lemieux found the target with just 89 of 335 thrown.
“I was strong tonight and my punches hurt him” said the proud winner.
Golovkin moves to 34-0 (31) on his HBO pay-per-view debut.
Arguably the sport’s finest fighter at any weight – Roman Gonzalez – impressed again with a ninth round win over former two-weight world champion Brian Viloria. The Hawaiian was floored in the third before the stoppage at 2-53 of round nine.
