CANELO ALVAREZ captured Liam Smith’s WBO super-welterweight title with a stunning ninth-round body blow knockout last night (Saturday, September 17) in Arlington, Texas.

26-year-old Mexican superstar Canelo had floored the stubborn former champion in the seventh. Liverpool’s Smith also lost his unbeaten record in front of 51,240 Texans at the AT&T Stadium.

“I told you I was going to give you a great fight and bring you the championship, and here it is,” said Canelo after the stoppage. “I started controlling him, but in the second round I hurt my hand. I hurt my right hand, so I had to use my left more often. I only used sparingly my right hand, but that’s what happened.”
