OAKLAND’S Andre Ward comfortably saw off Cuba’s Sullivan Barrera at the Oracle Arena in his hometown last night (March 26) with scores of 117-109, 119-109 and 117-108.

Unbeaten (29-0, 15 stoppages) 32-year-old Andre Ward is now a step close to a mouth-watering clash with Russia’s light-heavyweight king Sergey Kovalev.

“Sergey Kovalev is a great champion – hes the man at light-heavyweight,” he told American broadcaster HBO immediately after beating Barrera. “It’s not a matter of ‘if’ just ‘when’.”

On the undercard unbeaten American Olympian Joseph Diaz unanimously outpointed Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez in defence of his NABF featherweight crown. Also notching victories were Maurice Hooker, Aaron Coley, Daniel Franco, Rudy Puga, Junior Younan and big Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang.
