NATHAN CLEVERLY reveals to 666BET – sponsors of the blockbuster rematch between him and Tony Bellew on Saturday 22nd November at the Liverpool Echo Arena – that he will stop his bitter rival in the latter rounds.
Cleverly on Bellew
“I strongly believe I’m a better fighter than him. He is the bigger puncher, he has the one knockout punch, but I have the speed, fitness and punch variation. My boxing skills are better than his and my attributes overcome his.
“Everyone thinks he’s more suited to the cruiserweight division than me, as I’m new to the weight, but I’m definitely the stronger fighter.
“I respect him as a fighter; his punching ability and his hunger for the sport. But, I think he should respect me more. I’ve already beaten him once. And if he doesn’t respect me, he soon will.”
Cleverly on ‘the rivalry’
“There’s plenty of history and a lot has been said. It all comes down to him being bitter after the first fight – he hasn’t got over it. We genuinely dislike each other both inside and outside the ring. Our personalities clash.
“He’s said that I’ve only won vacant belts, but he’s a hypocrite and he talks a lot of nonsense. He should be grateful that I’ve vacated belts for him.”
Cleverly on the fight and the future
“I think the fight will be similar to the first, but more explosive. I believe my stronger fitness will wear him down, and I’ll get the late stoppage.
“I’m not worried about the crowd and I’ve got no issues going up to Liverpool, I’ve been there before and I beat him. There are going to be a lot of Welsh up there too – I’m taking 500 myself. It will be a great atmosphere.”
“If I get a repeat win against him, this time at cruiserweight, he should just retire and admit that he’s lost to the better man. He’s put himself up on a pedestal but I’m going to beat him again.”
Cleverly on potential future fights with Marco Huck and Sergey Kovalev
“I would jump at the chance to fight for a second world title in a second division, that is my goal. I’d have no problem going to Germany to fight Marco Huck.
“With Kovalev, I’ve said for a long time that he’s a different breed. He’s an exceptional fighter and a great boxer. I’d love the opportunity to have a rematch against him and avenge the only defeat I’ve had in my career. It would have to be at a catch weight, I couldn’t do light-heavy now. It would have to be somewhere between light-heavy and cruiser.
Cleverly on Anthony Joshua and Amir Khan
“Anthony is a tremendous talent, he’s got everything. So far he’s blitzed people with ease and there’s no reason why he can’t go all the way. He’s got a good head on him and he’s destined for very big things.
“If Amir is to fight [Floyd] Mayweather at some point I think he would do very well. His hand speed is excellent and his combinations and hand movement would cause him [Mayweather] problems.”
