THE long-time doctor of Muhammad Ali, Ferdie Pacheco died on Thursday in Miami at the age of 89.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I have to announce to the world the passing of my wonderful Dad, Ferdie Pacheco,” his daughter Tina Louise Pacheco wrote on Facebook. “He was a pharmacist, a doctor, a boxing commentator, a painter and a writer. But to me he was just Papa. It’s a heartbreak to lose a parent, but I know he’ll always be with me.”

In a statement Showtime said, “”The Fight Doctor” Ferdie Pacheco was the lead boxing analyst on Showtime Championship Boxing in the 80’s and early 90’s. Having worked the corner of the great Muhammad Ali, Pacheco had a unique perspective on fighters and the sport of boxing. He was passionate about the “Sweet Science” and a very opinionated commentator. Pacheco’s concern for fighters’ safety was evident during his years as a broadcaster. Our sincere condolences to the Pacheco family and to all those who grieve his passing.”
