LUIS CONCEPCION today relinquished his WBA world super-flyweight title after failing to make weight for his voluntary defence against Kal Yafai in Manchester.

The Panamanian was 2.7lbs over the limit at the first attempt and was given time to try and lose the excess baggage, but only managed to shift 0.3lbs.

His title was then made vacant and Yafai given the choice of walking away from the fight or boxing the overweight Concepcion, with the title only on the line for him.

There has been no official word on Yafai’s decision yet, but it seems unlikely the unbeaten Birmingham man will turn down the opportunity at this stage. If he did, there would be no guarantee of him being next in line to fight for the vacant title as this was a voluntary defence for Concepcion.
