Brian Vera scored the winner over Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr by 53 members of the press

Nobody believed Chavez Jnr did enough to win, writes Bobby Hunter

SEPTEMBER has been a crazy month for judge’s scorecards. At the start of the month, Ricky Burns was lucky to keep his WBO lightweight title with a disputed draw against Raymundo Beltran. Fast forward a week and CJ Ross provided probably the most bizarre scorecard of the year in Las Vegas, when she scored the Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez fight a draw.

Now add the HBO featured Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr - Brian Vera fight to that list as the three judges scored against public and professional opinion by awarding Chavez Jnr a unanimous points win.

The StubHub Centre Carson, California was the venue with 5,206 loyal fans in attendance. Most of them would be there supporting the "Son Of A Legend" Chavez Jnr as he had now moved up from middleweight to take aim at the super-middleweight and light-heavyweight champions. Both the divisions have been mentioned because no one seems to know what weight Chavez Jnr will compete at. His team seemed to keep moving the goal posts as several weight limits, varying from 162lbs to 173lbs, were reported. At the weigh in on Friday Chavez Jnr came in under the new limit by weighing 172.5lbs, Vera was a pound lighter at 171.5lbs.

The fight itself was a good one with Vera starting fast moving in and out of range peppering the much bigger Chavez Jnr with jabs and straight right hands. Vera was staggered a few times by Chavez during the fight, but Vera was busier. In the last three rounds it looked like Vera’s better fitness was winning him the fight as Chavez began to complain to referee Lou Moret when Vera attacked his body. Moret told Chavez that the punches were good and Vera was able to land more and more punches to seemingly cement the upset win.

As the fight went to the cards many press were posting on Twitter saying they had Vera a close points winner. Many were also saying that they expected Chavez Jnr to get the decision as he was "The Name" in this fight. The judges all scored for Chavez Jnr giving him a very unpopular unanimous points win

Judge Carla Caiz scored 96-94, Marty Denkin 97-93 and Gwen Adair 98-92. Terrible scores when you consider this Writers Scorecard,  (59) Press scores, Punch Stats and the press average score.
