KELL BROOK came face to face with Gennady Golovkin in New York on Thursday (July 14). Brook steps up from welterweight to challenge the feared middleweight champion on September 10 at the O2 in London.
“September 10 is the biggest day for me… It was big news for me because I know this guy, he’s a very good fighter, he’s very strong, he’s the best in his division right now. I’m very excited. This is the biggest test for me and biggest fight,” said Golovkin.
Brook believes he can make his mark on the sport with this showdown. “Sugar Ray Leonard boxed [Marvin] Hagler and beat him. My favourite fighter of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson has done that [moved up from welter]. To be a great fighter you’ve got to do great things,” Brook said. “It’s going to be a very, very hard fight. I’ve got to make sure everything is spot on in training. Do everything right, anything short of that we’re not going to come up with the goods.
“We’re going to through hell in this training camp but that’s what you need to do to reach greatness.”
