What titles are at stake and what are the rules and regulations?
The unbeaten Mayweather’s WBC and WBA welterweight titles will be on the line alongside Pacquiao’s WBO belt. That Manny is bringing only a third of the gold and has lost twice since demand for this fight began will have been factors favouring Mayweather in negotiations and why he looks set to snare 60 per cent (at least $120m) of the final bounty.
Pacquiao accepted the American’s demands during the latest round of discussions after his failure to do so in the past (2010 and 2012) resulted in the matchup falling through. This time the Filipino agreed to both United States Anti-Doping Agency random drug testing and a penalty of £3.2m should he fail.
The contest will be sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (they will decide the referee and judges and publicise any failed drug tests), and fought with their own choice of 8oz gloves. Mayweather – who demanded Marcos Maidana change his gloves before their May 2014 encounter – is expected to wear his usual Grants, with Pacquiao sticking to Cleto Reyes.
