FORMER world champion Colin McMillan has devised a new invention to help boxers hone their defensive skills while practising bagwork. Box Weave is an accessory that attaches to an existing bag, is adjustable to different heights and allows you to roll under its bars as you train and hit the bag.

It was McMillan’s brainchild from initial idea through to manufacture. “I’ve got a boxing academy (we go into schools and we’re based in Redbridge sports centre) and I’m always trying to think about ways for people to work on their defence. Throughout my career I’ve always thought boxing’s about hitting and not getting hit. The people who really inspired me were Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and people like that. I was always thinking of something that would enhance that and while doing a training session,” McMillan said.

“I was looking at various different things. I know in martial arts they’ve got sticks that come out [of a wooden dummy]. I saw that somewhere and thought let’s see how this can work. That was the original idea. Something for young kids in particular to try and change their level. You see a lot of people, they go on the bag and all they do is bam, bam, bam hit the bag, with no thought about defence because nothing’s coming back at you. So it got me thinking why don’t we work on something where you can hit the bag but at the same time you’ve got to change your level, you’ve got to move. It came into my head. I sat down and started working on different ideas.”

He had different prototypes made until he was satisfied with the design. Box Weave is now available on Amazon and from Sugar Ray’s and BoxFit. The arms are also detachable and can be used as punch paddles.

“We got a lot of positive response, a lot of people have tried it and they enjoyed using it. The main benefit of it is to try and work on your defence. You can change your level, you can use your footwork,” McMillan said.

“It’s designed where it’s got three arms, where you keep moving, underneath it and you’ve got the back end where you can go for a little punch out. You can adjust it to a particular height.

“Hopefully people can get enjoyment from it and it becomes a useful tool.”

TRUE to their innovative form, leading sportswear brand adidas have unveiled a boxing shoe that has been designed to revolutionise boxing training.

The BOOST outsole has a firm grip that allows for a strong push off and stability for sudden changes in direction. Tight yet comfortable straps wrap around the ankle giving support for these incredibly light and beautifully designed boots. The attention to detail continues over into the packaging, which includes an innovative 3D boxing ring lining to the inside of the box.

The Speedex 16.1 BOOST has a sole that replicates the cushioning of a boxing ring, thus enabling faster footwork and – they claim – endless energy, allowing boxers to train harder and for longer.

The Speedex 16.1 is a result of adidas working alongside the German national boxing team.  Senior Product Manager Jan Wildner says, “We have gained incisive and precise athlete feedback around the product’s performance. Understanding that 80% of a boxer’s fight preparation is in the gym with only 20% based in the ring, it was key to enhance our footwear to allow our boxers to train harder for longer at the highest speed levels.”

The adidas Speedex 16.1 is now available to purchase at adidasboxing.com and at specialist retailers, RRP €200. For the latest news follow @adidasboxing on Instagram.

Sterotape

Feedspot followFeedly follow

BOXERS need tape, to secure their handwraps and support their wrists and knuckles beneath their gloves so fighters can be confident of unleashing their full power on the bags, pads, in sparring and in competition, while reducing the risk of injury.

The Sterotape – Z.O. is the zinc oxide professional sports tape from Steroplast. This is strong, adhesive tape used to strap up joints, fasten wraps and help prevent injuries. It’s ideal for boxing and other combat sports.

Strips can be torn off by hand, both length-ways and width ways. The adhesive quality, the stickiness is obvious at first glance. It’s very hard to stretch the tape though, this is deliberate so it can be used securely as athletic strapping. It fits comfortably, easy to wrap round joints of different shapes and the zinc oxide adhesive is billed as “skin-friendly”.

This zinc oxide tape is available in a range of different sizes, with prices from £1.02 per roll. Call Steroplast on 0161 902 3030 or email sports@steroplast.co.uk and mention ‘Boxing News’ to receive a discount price.

THE adidas Hybrid 300 gloves are a welcome addition to the sportswear giant’s range of boxing gear. Available in four colours, the gloves have a minimalistic but contemporary design with a glossy finish that marks them out from standard training gloves. Made from genuine cowhide leather, the gloves are also sturdy and cut from a quality material that won’t diminish quickly.

At first, they feel like a tight fit but this is all a part of their design, which is geared toward enhancing performance by providing maximum support. With a little movement and use, the gloves feel much better suited to your hand and there is no hindrance on technique. In fact, their snug fit allows for more effective and crisper punching.

Satin-like lining in the gloves also add to their comfort and with ample ventilation – small holes in the underside of the thumb and fist – extended use is also possible without perspiration affecting the inside.

The Velcro strap on gloves can sometimes be a cause for concern – some are too short, some too long, some too wide and some too narrow. Adidas have got it just right with the Hybrid 300s, using a large, rigid strap which ensures there is plenty of support around the wrist. There is also an elastic strap to allow for manoeuvrability during use.

The foam padding is multi-layered and consists of horse hair. The padding has been hand moulded and, while a little stiff at first, swiftly becomes properly cushioned and effective. The fist has a wide surface area and while this may not be to everyone’s taste – as it can make it a little more difficult to sharpen your accuracy – it dissipates the impact of each blow, preventing any injury or discomfort.

Title Boxing

What the manufacturer says: The perfect combination of Gel fist gloves and traditional semi-elastic handwraps to bring unbelievable protection and performance. Slip the neoprene glove over the fist for a custom form fit. More than a 1/2″ layer of Gel makes up the fist for an incredibly comfortable and impact resistant wrap. Hook-and-loop attachment on neoprene wrist and wrap wrist for extra secure wear. Complete with 80″ of semi-elastic wrapping for an ideal custom fit. Can be worn under gloves or alone for light bag work and training.

What we say: The wrapping of hands is an art. But it is also time consuming. Sometimes you don’t have time to fasten bandages properly around your fists. The Title Platinum Hybrid Gel Wraps however give you the option to just slide on wraps to protect your hands and get straight to training.

The neoprene padding is thick and firm, offering good protection though look out to check that you can form a solid fist without the fingers being pressed slightly apart. To provide firm wrist support these have a bandage that can be wrapped round and fastened securely.

Normally worn under gloves, a cheap, efficient alternative to wraps for some sessions, you can even experiment by using these in light training without gloves, to work on speed and punching without a load. Just be careful. A boxer’s most important tool are his hands.

Available for $16.99 from www.titleboxing.com
