CANELO ALVAREZ has issued a harsh rebuttal after Gennady Golovkin accused him of cheating. Alvarez maintains, that even though he failed a drug test, and has now withdrawn from his rematch with Golovkin, he did not deliberately consume an illegal substance.

He hit back at Golovkin saying, “What Golovkin or his team say does not bother me at all. Because number one, they’re not doctors, they’re not the experts.”

“I don’t pay attention to them,” he continued. “It sounds more to me like an excuse for not wanting to fight me, like he’s scared, to be honest.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo’s promoter, backed up his man, maintaining that the failed test was due to eating contaminated meat in Mexico and that Alvarez would not deliberately cheat.

“His honour means everything. His passion for the sport, since he was 15 years old when he turned professional is like no other. He’s proud of what he accomplished and I’ve never met an athlete or a fighter who’s so proud of what he’s accomplished,” De La Hoya said.

“We strongly feel that Canelo is one of the most honourable fighters on the planet today.”
