COMMMONWEALTH Games medallists, Antony Fowler and Sam Maxwell will star for the British Lionhearts in the teams’ first match of the new season of World Series Boxing (WSB) against the China Dragons at London’s York Hall on January 15.
The fixture against the China Dragons will be the opening match of the 2014-15 season of WSB and the first time the British Lionhearts have competed in the competitions since the 2012-13 season when the team reached the quarter-finals.
The match will held be at five weight categories covering light-flyweight (49kg), bantamweight (56kg), light-welterweight (64kg), middleweight (75kg) and heavyweight (91kg). The team will be made-up of members of the GB Boxing squad, plus one overseas selection.
Bouts will be over five, three minutes rounds and boxers will compete without vests and headguards.
Fowler and Maxwell have both competed in WSB before for the Lionhearts. Light-welterweight, Maxwell competed five times in the 2012-13 season, twice taking-on Ukraine’s legendary two-time Olympic champion and current WBO featherweight World Champion, Vasyl Lomachenko.
Middleweight, Fowler, stopped America’s Marquis Moore in the second round on his only previous appearance in an away fixture against USA knockouts in November 2012. Unfortunately he injured his right hand in the process and was not able to compete again for the rest of the season.
Fowler said: “I feel like I have unfinished business with WSB and am looking forward to getting back in the ring and competing in England.
“Being part of the GB Boxing squad we compete abroad most of the time so it is brilliant to have the opportunity to box in front of a home crowd at such a great venue as York Hall. If the matches are anything like the last time the British Lionhearts competed in WSB then the fans will be in for a fantastic night of boxing and some great action.”
