Feathers not feather-fisted
This week's issue
TWO of the best featherweights in the world made big statements last weekend and Boxing News’ Zach Levin was ringside at Madison Square Garden to see it. Cuban dynamo Yuriokis Gamboa and Puerto Rican puncher Juan Manuel Lopez stayed on course for an eventual superfight but in differing circumstances, while Derryman John Duddy was also on the bill.
There was controversy for some in Brentwood when the decision was announced in the British bantamweight title fight between defending champion Ian Napa and challenger Jamie McDonnell. Daniel Herbert was there to assess the judgement of the officials and to witness one of the knockouts of the year so far, in the chief support.
We look ahead to Brian Magee’s big European title chance in Denmark. The Belfastman takes on local super-middle Mads Larsen in Aarhus, while Aberdeen’s Lee McAllister defends his Commonwealth lightweight title in Glasgow.
We have two big features written by two superb journalists new to Boxing News. Two-time William Hill Sports Book of the Year winner Donald McRae meets pro prospect and world amateur champion Frankie Gavin, while The Daily Telegraph writer Gareth A Davies gets to the cruz of Wild Card conditioning coach Alex Ariza.
Elsewhere, Shawn Porter is our Hot Prospect, Magee takes the 60-Second Interview and we have news exclusives with David Haye, Michael Katsidis and Tyson Fury.
