Andy Bell
Doncaster’s 23-year-old British super-flyweight champion, 11-3 (3)
Age started boxing: 10 at Doncaster Plant ABC. I had my first fight at 11.
First boxing memory: Watching Naseem Hamed fights on TV. I used to love Naz.
Inspiration: I fight for my kids really – two boys, Kenzie (4) and Rhys (5).
Favourite all-time fighter: Sugar Ray Leonard. He was brilliant, a great technician.
Best fight you’ve seen: Barrera-Morales I. They went toe-to-toe throughout the fight; it was just non-stop action.
Pre-fight meal: Pasta and chicken, maybe a bit of steak and rice. I keep eating little bits here and there throughout the day, and stop an hour before the fight.
What do you do to relax: Mainly spend time with my kids, take them to the park for a kickabout.
Pre-fight superstition: Nothing.
What training (if any) do you do between fights: I go to the gym four times a week and just tick over. I might do two six to seven-mile runs.
Typical breakfast: A protein shake and some porridge.
Toughest part of being a boxer: The training and making the weight. I hate the dieting because I like my takeaways. When I’m not in camp, I eat like a pig. I fight at 8st 3lbs but can go up to 9st 10lbs.
Favourite music: I like my Motown.
Last book you read: Ricky Hatton’s autobiography [The Hitman: My Story].
Favourite film: Scarface.
What car do you drive: I don’t drive at the moment. Actually, I don’t have a licence. My mum’s really good, she drives me around, drives me to training.
Where do you train: At Matt Scriven’s Old One-Two gym in Mansfield with the rest of the Robin Hood camp.
Training routine: I train six days a week. Twice a week I do 10-mile runs and then twice more I do four-five miles with sprints in between. I do bag-work, pad-work and start sparring after a month of a two to three-month camp. I stop sparring a week before a fight.
Toughest man faced: Chris Edwards. He was constantly in my face, didn’t let me breathe. He made me fight for the full 12 rounds. It was harder than I expected – I thought I’d be too strong for him, but he showed his grit.
What supplements do you take: Multi-vitamins.
Job outside boxing: None now, but I used to do a bit of block-paving.
Last place you went on holiday: Tenerife with my girlfriend and kids.
Best boxer in the sport today: Joe Calzaghe. He’s a great fighter.
Favourite football team: Doncaster Rovers.
