Barrie Jones

Rhondda’s 23-year-old welterweight contender, 15-3 (7)

Age started boxing: Seven. My first fight was at 10.

First boxing memory: Watching my older brother Robert at Rhondda ABC. He was six years older than me. I watched him and loved it.

Inspiration: I’ve always loved boxing but my brothers and my father really got me into it.

Favourite all-time fighter: Joe Calzaghe, because he’s the best in the business.

Best fight you’ve seen: Corrales-Castillo I. It was a good scrap. I think it showed how hard boxing can be; they both just went for it.

Pre-fight meal: Pasta and chicken.

What do you do to relax: I play my PS3 and watch TV. I had the Fight Night game but got bored of it.

Pre-fight superstition: Nothing

What training (if any) do you do between fights: I’m always in the gym. I don’t train as hard, but every day I’m there, I do a bit of running.

Typical breakfast: I used to eat any old cereal before I went pro but now it’s Quaker Oats every day.

Toughest part of being a boxer: When there’s a fight coming up, training hard every day. My dad is my trainer and pushes me a lot harder because he wants me to succeed.

Favourite music: I listen to anything, mainly dance music.

Last book you read: I don’t really read books but I get Boxing News every week.

Favourite film: Dumb and Dumber. I know everyone says Scarface, but I prefer comedies.

What car do you drive: I don’t. My girlfriend drives me around in her Ka, but she wants a new car now. She’s probably waiting for me to buy her one (laughs). I’d like to... I’m a nice guy.

Where do you train: Ferndale. It used to be an amateur gym and now it’s pro-am.

Most of the time, I’m the only pro there. But it’s good because my dad concentrates on me.

Training routine: I train six days a week; Sundays off. I run seven miles in the morning. In the gym 12-2, I do lots of circuits, exercises, bit of weights, lots of shadowboxing. In the gym again 6-8, I do 15 rounds on the bags, lots of pad work and technique.

Toughest man faced: I sparred Bradley Pryce about three years ago; he didn’t come out hard but you could see the quality and timing of his punches. I’m surprised he’s lost so many. [This was before Jones lost to Kell Brook].

What supplements do you take: Vitamins and cod liver oil.

Job outside boxing: None now, but I used to work in a furniture factory before I turned pro.

Last place you went on holiday: Magaluf.

Best boxer in the sport today: Joe Calzaghe.

Favourite football team: Liverpool. [Fernando] Torres is brilliant isn’t he?
